Haircare Through the Harmattan Season

Dry, dusty Harmattan winds are hard on hair. Here is how to keep yours moisturised, strong and protected.

The Harmattan season brings dry, dusty air that pulls moisture from hair and scalp, leaving strands brittle and prone to breakage. A few adjustments keep hair healthy.

Prioritise moisture

Switch to a richer, hydrating conditioner and seal moisture in with a natural oil such as shea or coconut. The classic approach is to layer a water-based leave-in first, then an oil to lock it in.

Protect your ends

Protective styles that tuck away the ends reduce daily friction and moisture loss. Avoid overly tight styles that stress the hairline.

Cover up outdoors

A satin-lined cap or scarf shields hair from dust and wind. Satin also reduces the friction that cotton causes, so consider a satin pillowcase at night too.

Do not skip the scalp

A dry scalp flakes and itches in Harmattan. Massage in a lightweight oil a few times a week to keep it comfortable and support healthy growth.
